How to Play Texas Hold'em

Complete guide for beginners to learn the rules, hands, and strategies of the world's most popular poker game.

Game Objective

Texas Hold'em is the most popular poker variation in the world. The goal is simple: make the best 5-card combination using the 2 cards you receive and the 5 community cards on the table.

You can win in two ways:

  • Best hand — Showing your cards at the end (showdown) with the strongest combination among all players.
  • Force a fold — Betting in a way that all opponents fold, and you take the pot without showing your cards.

Blinds and the Dealer

Before each hand, two players are forced to make mandatory bets called blinds. This ensures there is always money in the pot.

Blinds and the Dealer Position
Dealer (D) Button indicating the dealer of the round. Rotates one position each hand.
Small Blind (SB) Forced bet of 50% of the blind. Located to the left of the dealer.
Big Blind (BB) Forced bet of 100% of the blind. Located to the left of the SB.
Position The further right of the dealer, the better the position — you act last and see others' moves.

Table Position

There are three main positions at the Texas Hold'em table:

Position Description
Early Position (EP) First to speak. Most disadvantageous position — you act without knowing what others will do.
Middle Position (MP) Intermediate position. You've seen some moves but can still be surprised.
Late Position (LP) Last to speak. Most advantageous position — you act with information from everyone else.

Betting Types

In Texas Hold'em, there are three types of betting:

Type Description
No Limit Players can bet any amount of chips available at any time.
Fixed Limit Players must bet at predefined moments with predetermined amounts.
Pot Limit Players can only bet up to the total value of the pot.

Table Actions

In each round, you can perform the following actions:

Action Description
Fold Give up the hand and lose the chips already bet.
Call Match the current bet amount to stay in the hand.
Raise Increase the current bet, forcing opponents to pay more or fold.
All-in Bet all remaining chips at once.
Check Pass your turn without betting. Only possible when there is no bet to call.

Betting Rounds

A Texas Hold'em hand has 4 betting rounds. In each round, you can: call, raise, or fold.

1

Pre-Flop

Each player receives 2 hole cards. Actions start to the left of the Big Blind.

2

Flop

3 community cards are revealed. Second betting round.

3

4th community card is revealed. Third betting round.

4

River

5th and final community card is revealed. Last betting round.

Tips for Beginners

Play strong hands

At first, only play high pairs (AA, KK, QQ, JJ) and high suited cards (AK, AQ, AJ). Fewer hands = fewer problems.

Pay attention to position

The later you act, the more information you have. Play more hands in position (last to speak) and fewer out of position.

Don't chase losses

Poker has variance. You can lose several hands in a row even playing well. Don't try to recover losses by betting emotionally.

Observe your opponents

Watch how others play. Who bets a lot? Who folds easily? Use this information to your advantage.

Manage your bankroll

Never play with money you can't afford to lose. Join tables with blinds that fit your bankroll.
